Extra-Inning Victory a Costly One

LANCASTER — Shane Monahan’s bases-loaded single in the 11th inning Sunday lifted the JetHawks to a 7-6 victory over the Modesto A’s before 5,303 at the Hangar.
Monahan’s hit gave the JetHawks (24-27) their third victory in four games after losing 17 of 20.
It was a bittersweet victory, as JetHawk shortstop Luis Molina injured his left knee on a collision at second base. Molina tore the anterior and medial cruciate ligaments and cartilage in his knee and will be out for the season.
With third baseman Carlos Villalobos sidelined for at least 10 days with a jammed left shoulder from a collision at home plate Friday, Molina’s injury left the team with three healthy infielders. Catcher Scot Sealy was forced to forced to play third base for the final six innings.
Before Molina’s injury, Larry Beinfest, the Mariners’ director of player development, had already decided to promote starting pitcher Ivan Montane to double A.
The Jethawks are expected to receive two players to replace Molina and Montane.
