STONE WORK: Reflections on Serious Play & Other Aspects of Country Life by John Jerome (University Press of New England: $11.95, 212 pp.). In this gentle meditation, the process of building a stone wall becomes a metaphor for the author’s desire to lead “a more sensory life.” The changing seasons of rural Massachusetts and the physicality of moving rocks free Jerome to savor purely physical sensations without attempting to intellectualize them: “Every time that I see a little bit more, it tells me there are worlds and worlds more to see, deeper yet.”
