Quake Monitors

Just a comment about “Monitors Warn of Earthquakes Back Home” (July 8), about the legislators installing expensive earthquake monitoring equipment:
What a waste of money! For timely earthquake information, there is a gopher site accessible from any web browser at https://www.oes.ca.gov:8001 that has all the latest seismic bulletins as they are generated.
For Caltech to provide monitors for state legislators is ludicrous! (For them, tuning to AM news radio might suffice.) However, if they must have a computer to tell them about earthquakes, and if they already have PCs wired to the Internet, then pointing their browsers to the above Office of Emergency Services web site can keep legislators current on bulletins without additional taxpayer expense! This is another example of government executives being caught up in technology without thinking it through.
