Rookie Impressive in Carolina Camp

Carolina Panther Coach Dom Capers has been impressed with rookie running back Marquette Smith, who is getting a good look from the Panthers and may even be emerging as a favorite of Capers to win the starting halfback position given the holdout of first-round draft choice Tim Biakabutuka.
“I’ve been pleased with Marquette,” Capers said. “He has had a good first week. He has some strength, he has good cutting ability and he is physical enough for a guy his size. He has that body type of a lot of runners in the league right now.”
Smith, a former Florida State tailback who transferred to small Central Florida, was a 1996 fifth-round draft pick by the Panthers.
