Mortensen Picks Up Where She Left Off

UCLA freshman Kim Mortensen, 1995 national high school cross-country champion for Thousand Oaks High last year, won her first college race Saturday when she timed 18 minutes 3 seconds over a 5,000-meter course at Panther Creek State Park in Knoxville, Tenn.

Paced by Mortensen, UCLA defeated Georgia Tech, 26-30, and host Tennessee, 16-43.

Mortensen’s next race will be the Aztec Invitational in San Diego on Sept. 21.

Leading lady: Stacey Hebert finds herself in a familiar position: as leader.

The former Buena High soccer and track standout last week was voted captain of the Oregon women’s soccer team.

As an 18-year-old freshman, few players would be comfortable leading a first-year program with 33 players, some as old as 22.

Herbert is fine.

“It’s a little bit weird because on the teams I’ve captained before I knew everyone and here I’m with 32 new faces,” she said. “But I’m happy. I like that role.”
