Abbot Keating to Hold Program on ‘Centering Prayer’

Abbot Thomas Keating, the Trappist monk who reintroduced “centering prayer” to the modern world, will be at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Pacific Palisades this weekend.
The 73-year-old author and teacher, based in Snowmass, Colo., has traveled the world leading workshops on this form of contemplation.
“The premise of centering prayer is to provide contemplation in an active life,” says Gustave Reininger, who with Keating founded Contemplative Outreach--which offers retreats and workshops--13 years ago.
The program begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service and a talk by Keating. It is free. The workshops on Saturday--for beginners--and Sunday--for those already practicing centering prayer--require reservations. A contribution of $40 per person is requested for Saturday, $25 for Sunday.
