Inquiring families want to know: How can Disney top its record-breaking year?
The studio has already announced the Feb. 4 release of “Bambi,” which has not been available for nearly a decade.
This “definitive” fully restored 55th anniversary edition will be available for only 55 days and will include archival footage chronicling the film’s production. On March 4, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” swings onto video.
Beyond this, Disney exercises its “don’t ask, won’t tell” policy. “We will be releasing,” said Marcelle Abraham, executive director of public relations, “one major hit title a month, including some of our classic Disney films from the vault, new animated hits as well as direct-to-video product.”
First up in the latter category is Disney’s first live-action direct-to-video film, “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves,” starring Rick Moranis, to be released on March 18.
But that doesn’t stop retailer speculation over which other Disney animated classics might be released next year. Most likely candidates, some say, include “The Black Caldron,” one of the studio’s few animated features yet to be released, and one of Disney’s most requested titles, “The Little Mermaid.”

Disney isn’t the only company to tease eager viewers. Fox is planning a 20th anniversary edition of “an Oscar-winning title” as well as “a special edition of a camp classic,” according to Steve Feldstein, vice president of publicity.
After the success of its “Rocky” and James Bond promotions, MGM/UA plans to give similar attention to two of its most beloved franchises.
