Fee Cut May Boost Senior Meal Program

More seniors will be able to participate in the city’s weekday meal program now that it will cost the city less to operate.

The Orange County Transportation Authority has decided to reduce the fee it charges the city to transport homebound senior citizens to Los Alamitos’ Senior Meal Program and return them to their residences.

Under a contract the City Council is expected to approve Monday, the city would pay OCTA $1.18 instead of $1.54 per trip for each participating senior.

The savings of up to $400 over the next six months would allow the city to expand its meal program, said Gail Silva, the city’s community services supervisor.

“The little cushion will allow us to pick up additional riders,” she said.

The city has budgeted $6,000 for senior transportation for the 1996-97 fiscal year. Currently, an OCTA van transports eight to 15 seniors to the program a day.

Residents 60 or older who are interested in the program should contact Linda Flores, the city’s nutrition site manager, at (310) 430-1073, Ext. 526.
