BIRCH BACKGROUND

I’m not sure which is more absurd: William H. McIlhany’s insistence on the John Birch Society’s “anti-totalitarian and anti-racist” stance, or that The Times chose to print his ideological fantasy (Letters, Jan. 5). Any 10-year-old with a minimum of research can discover the society’s actual record. McIlhany either lacks the most basic understanding of anti-totalitarianism and anti-racism or (worse) he has created his own definition.
