J.H. Holley asked in a Jan. 9 letter, “If I sell a vehicle, how can I make the new owner register it?”
Simple. Complete the sale at either the DMV or the Auto Club. If buyer and seller present the clerk with the released pink slip, proof of smog compliance and sales tax funds, the transfer is instantly recorded on the DMV computer in Sacramento; and if everything is legitimate the buyer instantly gets a temporary proof of title.
Also, it’s best to get paid by cashier’s check, only to be exchanged for the temporary slip. This procedure protects both the buyer and seller against fraud.
