A ringing start: It’s been a hectic week for Jim Fenwick, who officially started as Cal State Northridge’s football coach on Monday. The phone is ringing nonstop, with calls from coaches who want jobs and players who want scholarships.

Fenwick has taken to returning calls in an office adjacent to his, so his answering machine can pick up all the incoming calls and he doesn’t miss any messages.

“I’m getting a secretary soon,” Fenwick said.

A secretary? Dave Baldwin never had a secretary.

“Well,” Fenwick said with a smile, “my sister.”

Backing out: The Master’s College men’s basketball team is expected to be without forward Reggie Robinson for several more games.

Robinson, a 6-foot-8 junior who is averaging 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds, has missed the last five games with a herniated disk in his back and Coach Bill Oates doesn’t expect him back any time soon.

“We’re on a week to week basis with him,” Oates said. “He can’t even practice right now so we don’t expect to have him back for some time. . . . It’s possible he might miss the rest of the season.”

Pirates’ den: Ventura College fans turned out in force Saturday night to watch the University of San Francisco men’s basketball team, which includes four former Pirate players and ex-Ventura coach Phil Mathews, beat Pepperdine, 59-56, in Malibu.

“It feels good to play in front of our fans,” said center Hakeem Ward, scored 16 points and made the game’s critical defensive stop on a short shot by Pepperdine center Bryan Hill in the closing seconds.

“Half the people here were from Ventura.”

Former Matador on move? Former Cal State Northridge Athletic Director Bob Hiegert has applied for an associate athletic director position at Weber State, Hiegert’s wife, Jackie, confirmed Thursday.
