Brokenborough’s Breakthrough Effort Lifts Temple Past No. 4 Cincinnati, 70-55

Sophomore guard Rasheed Brokenborough’s outside shooting had gotten so bad that his Temple teammates nicknamed him “Broken-shot.”
A new nickname might be in order, however, after Brokenborough made eight of 14 three-point shots and scored a career-high 31 points in Temple’s 70-55 victory over fourth-ranked Cincinnati in the second game of an Atlantic 10-Conference USA doubleheader Thursday night in Cincinnati.
Brokenborough, who made only eight of his previous 45 three-point shots, scored 17 of his points during a 23-9 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half that put Temple (8-4) in control.
The Owls used an aggressive matchup zone defense to frustrate Cincinnati’s leading scorer Danny Fortson, who had only nine points--14 below his average--and had a streak of 43 games in double figures come to an end. The Bearcats also missed 19 of 31 three-point shots.
Cincinnati (11-3) had won its nine previous games and had beaten Temple in the last four meetings between the schools, including the second round of last season’s NCAA tournament.
