Donald H. Harcourt; Investor and Philanthropist

Donald H. Harcourt, 64, Santa Barbara investor and philanthropist. The grandson of Alfred Harcourt, who founded the publishing house Harcourt, Brace & Co., he was born in Stamford, Conn., but spent most of his life in the Santa Barbara area. He co-founded Islay Investments, which developed, owns and manages apartment and office buildings, warehouses and shopping centers throughout California. Harcourt, who played football and swam competitively, earned a degree in economics at UCLA and one in electrical engineering at Stanford University. He was a navigator and bombardier in the Air Force’s Strategic Air Command, held an air transport pilot’s license and for several years managed Santa Barbara Aviation. Harcourt served on the boards of two private schools he had attended, Webb and Cate. On Jan. 11 in Montecito, Calif.
