Defensive lineman Brad Swenson of Bethel Christian High and offensive lineman Matt Matros of Quartz Hill top 27 players selected to the High Desert Football Coaches Assn. all-academic team.
Swenson (4.0) and Matros (3.99) have the highest grade-point averages among players from the region. Others recognized include Palmdale receiver Malosi Leonard (3.89), Highland tight end Mike DeLeon (3.79), Littlerock running back Devon Reese (3.59) and Paraclete defensive back Chris McMurtry (3.5).
Paraclete Coach Steve Hagerty and assistants Jeff Jambretz, Barry Pittman, Rick McGuire and Dan Steen were named coaching staff of the year.

Cal State Northridge had 10 members of its cross-country and golf teams named to Big Sky Conference all-academic teams.
Jamie Whitmore, Eman Barfield, Andrea Bruins, Jennifer Overlock and Ellen Muench were named to the women’s cross-country team.
Javier Ramirez, Jeff Nasternak and John Greene were named to the men’s cross-country team.
Ted Heath and Soran Lim were selected to the men’s and women’s golf teams, respectively.

Northridge receiver David Romines was selected a second-team All-American by The Sports Network and Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. Romines, who caught 87 passes for 1,300 yards, also was a second-team pick on the Associated Press All-America team.
In addition, the Football Gazette included Northridge quarterback Aaron Flowers on the second team and linebacker Marc Goodson on the third team.

Antelope Valley High defensive coordinator Wayne Ekimoto is the recipient of the Gib Deer Award, given annually to the top high school football assistant by the Southern California Coaches Assn.

Sophomore middle blocker Ryan Millar, a graduate of Highland High, was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball player of the week after leading Brigham Young to the title of the UC Santa Barbara tournament.
