Marina Girls Battle Back to Beat San Clemente

San Clemente blew a 14-point lead as eighth-ranked Marina came back to upset the Tritons, 57-53, in overtime, in a nonleague girls’ basketball game Saturday at San Clemente. The Tritons, who led, 34-25, at halftime, made only five of 29 from the field after the second quarter.
The sixth-ranked Tritons led by two late in the fourth quarter when a layup by Marina’s Natalie Nakase, who had 17 points and six assists, tied the score, 50-50, with 38 seconds left. San Clemente (15-6) had a chance to take the lead with 8.9 seconds left, but Colleen Turnbull, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds, missed two free throws to send the game into overtime.
Marina is 15-3.
In other nonleague girls’ basketball:
Pacifica 51, University 46--Jaymee Pendergast scored 22 points for Pacifica (14-6).
Jerri Armendariz scored 29 points for University (8-11).
In the Sunset League:
Huntington Beach 57, Los Alamitos 43--Megan Masuda scored 20 points and made four three-pointers for 10th-ranked Huntington Beach (14-6, 3-2). Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham had 15 points for the Oilers (8-10, 1-4).
In Sunset League boys’ basketball:
Los Alamitos 76, Huntington Beach 53--Adam Seaton had 20 points and 10 rebounds as third-ranked Los Alamitos defeated Huntington Beach. Ricky Garibay scored 19 points and had six steals for the Griffins.
Los Alamitos (18-2, 5-0) outscored the Oilers, 22-5, in the first quarter.
Chris Basich scored 15 points for Huntington Beach (10-11, 1-4).
In the Academy League:
Capistrano Valley Christian 70, Orangewood Academy 55--Tim Baker scored 21 points as Capistrano Valley Christian defeated Orangewood Academy and took sole possession of first place in the Academy League. Andrew Jennings had 20 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (11-6, 5-0).
Joey Oswald had 19 points for Orangewood Academy (9-5, 4-1).
In the Montclair wrestling invitational:
Anaheim wins invitational--Anibal Reyes finished first at 125 pounds as Anaheim scored 194 1/2 points to win the Montclair Invitational. Ernesto Vargas (152 pounds) and Jose Rodriguez (171) also won for the fifth-ranked Colonists.
Eighth-ranked Santiago finished third with 103 points.
