This Was One Game They Couldn’t Lose

Bill Plaschke’s article, “Smart Bombs,” on Jan. 28 tells the story of a rare type of student-athlete. I will never forget the time when as a member of the Redlands Bulldogs we opposed Caltech in the late ‘80s. Like so many other teams, we went into the locker room at halftime with a huge lead. On a chalkboard was written, “You may be able to beat us, but can you solve this?” What followed was a lengthy physics problem, which was attempted unsuccessfully by one of our more cerebral players.
