Mars rises due east a few minutes after 9 p.m., and by 11 p.m. it is a quarter of the way up the eastern sky. It is 77 million miles from Earth and brighter than any star in the sky except Sirius. Its distinct orange color helps give it away. Mars comes closest to the Earth in five weeks when it rises at sunset and is visible all night long.
