Harvard-Westlake High volleyball player Malaika Naulls has committed to Florida.
The Times’ regional Player of the Year, Naulls was also the Mission League most valuable player. She chose Florida over Texas.
“On my visit down there [last month], I really enjoyed everyone I met and I have a high respect for the coach [Mary Wise] and the team members,” said the 6-foot-1 middle blocker. “I wanted to be on a top-notch volleyball team, so that was a factor, too.”
Jim Newton, a football and basketball standout at Newbury Park High, has signed a letter of intent with Utah State to play football.
Newton, a 6-9, 240-pound offensive lineman, last played football for the Panthers in 1995. He sat out last season because of a disciplinary suspension.
Ready to go: College of the Canyons point guard Kyetra Brown, who missed the team’s past five games after being treated for dehydration, has received medical clearance to play Saturday against Valley.
Coaching move: Beth Marmion has been named women’s volleyball coach at The Master’s College.
Marmion was the Cal Lutheran women’s coach in 1993 and coached the Zuma Bay Volleyball Club for three years. She replaces Dean Conk, who was fired last month after nine seasons at the college.
