Ventura Ends 21-Year Tennis Drought

Ventura College clinched its first Western State Conference men’s tennis championship since 1976 on Tuesday with a 9-0 victory over Bakersfield at Ventura.
The Pirates (14-1, 9-1 in conference play) did not lose a set and yielded only 13 games in 12 sets of singles play.
Mark Harradine defeated Marty Crider, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, and Andres Szlykawicz posted the same score at No. 4 for Ventura. Victor Lozano dominated Matt Garner, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3.
Ventura is ranked fourth in the state, its first-ever top-five ranking.
Stanford 5, Pepperdine 2--Freshman twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo helped the seventh-ranked Cardinal (15-1) to a nonconference victory in Palo Alto. Bob Bryan defeated Chris Hill, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, and Mike Bryan beat Brad Sceney, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3.
Sceney and Simon Aspelin beat the Bryans, 8-4, in doubles for ninth-ranked Pepperdine (17-5).
BASEBALL
Canyons 18, Hancock 5--Hiram Damwijk was four for five and drove in six runs to lead a 20-hit attack for the Cougars (22-8, 9-3) in a Western State Conference interdivisional game at Canyons.
Damwijk, who is batting .466 and has 26 RBIs in 12 conference games, had a two-run double in the fourth and a three-run triple in the sixth.
Valley 7, Oxnard 6--Steve Guerrero’s two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning off Jack Wilson (3-2) capped a three-run rally for the Monarchs (3-24-3, 2-10) in a WSC interdivisional game at Valley.
Glendale 16, Ventura 9--David Boger’s grand slam highlighted an eight-run fifth inning for the Vaqueros (20-8, 9-3) in a WSC game at Glendale.
Moorpark 20, Pierce 16--Nate Janowicz had four hits and scored four runs for the Raiders in a WSC game at Moorpark.
Tony Montiel had a double, home run and three RBIs for Pierce (12-17, 4-8).
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine d. UC Irvine, 10-15, 15-7, 15-5, 15-9--Kevin Barnett had 25 kills and George Roumain added 24 for the Waves (17-5, 12-3) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Pepperdine.
