Fund Manager Sues McGraw-Hill Over Article

Julian Robertson Jr., one of the nation’s biggest hedge-fund managers, is suing New York-based McGraw-Hill Cos. for $1 billion over an allegedly defamatory profile in BusinessWeek. Robertson, chairman of Tiger Management Corp., also based in New York, filed papers in a New York state court accusing BusinessWeek’s publisher, McGraw-Hill, reporter Gary Weiss and Editor in Chief Stephen Shepard of making “false and defamatory statements” in the weekly magazine’s April 1, 1996, edition. Robertson’s legal papers didn’t say what he objected to in the article. Robertson is seeking $500 million in compensatory damages and $500 million in punitive damages. A spokesman for McGraw-Hill also declined to comment, saying the company hadn’t been served with the legal papers yet.
