Court Injunction Blocks Beach Volleyball Tournament
- Share via
A Superior Court judge issued a preliminary injunction Friday prohibiting a men’s professional beach volleyball tournament on the sand in Manhattan Beach.
Judge Robert H. O’Brien ruled that the city of Manhattan Beach did not properly comply with environmental impact laws when it granted a permit authorizing a stop on the men’s pro tour, which is run by the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals.
The injunction was sought by the South Bay Coastal Alliance, which objects to the tournament because of noise and traffic concerns.
The association had announced Thursday that it would move the open to Hermosa Beach. It will take place by the pier June 13-15; tickets will be free. But the association has expressed interest in returning to Manhattan Beach, perhaps even later this year. The next hearing in the case is set for July 31.
