Re “At Last, a UC Admissions Plan That Rewards Merit,” by Geoffrey Taylor Gibbs, Opinion, June 1:
Gibbs’ proposal has merit. His plan emphasizes merit while providing an opportunity to achieve a large measure of political correctness. My contribution to fine-tune his idea is the establishment of a realistic GPA that the 4% must achieve before entering the academic pool. How will the proposal redistribute (if necessary and desired) the unused seats allocated by the 4% approach?

* If the UC system did adopt a “4% for each high school plan,” it might have some interesting side effects: A number of Anglo and Asian American students who were concerned about making it in their own top-performing high schools could move into a poor-performing school to assure their acceptance into the UC system.
This could produce another side benefit, causing additional positive competition in those schools.
