GARDEN GROVE — A man armed with a crossbow was arrested for allegedly making terrorist threats after barricading himself in his apartment for 3 1/2 hours Sunday afternoon.
Police said the incident began about 11 a.m. when they were called to the apartment of Fred Ray Coomer on the 12000 block of Kensington Avenue after Coomer allegedly threatened two acquaintances. A SWAT team was summoned to the scene because Coomer, 36, failed to respond to repeated attempts to contact him by telephone.
Eventually, according to Paul McInerny, a spokesman for the Garden Grove Police Department, police were able to persuade Coomer to surrender by speaking to him on a public address system.
He was taken to Orange County Jail and booked on suspicion of making terrorist threats, displaying a weapon in a threatening manner, possession of marijuana and possession of illegal fireworks.
A bomb squad also was called to the apartment, McInerny said, after police found a smoke device in it. The squad took possession of the device without incident, he said.
