Four gang members were convicted Tuesday of murdering two teenagers who were shot to death at a 1994 graduation party in San Marino, a prosecutor said.
Scheduled for sentencing July 17 in Los Angeles Superior Court are Ung Bang and Vi Quoc Chau, both 19, and Cuong Chan Phan and Don Sam Hac, both 21.
Prosecutors said the defendants crashed the party and opened fire to avenge the December 1993 slaying of a gang member in El Monte.
The victims, David Hang, 15, and Dennis Buan, 18, were slain as they watched television with a large group at the relatively quiet party, according to trial testimony. Seven other students were injured in the violence, which stunned the community.
“We were never able to determine if there were any rival gang members” at the party, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Anthony Manzella.
After several days of deliberations, jurors convicted Bang, Ha and Chau of first-degree murder. Phan was convicted of second-degree murder.
Two others, Mia Quiocho and Tami Tran, both 20, earlier pleaded guilty to being accessories after the fact and are awaiting sentencing. That pair and another alleged participant who was granted immunity, Thang Van Ho, testified for the prosecution.
