CSUN Drops 4 Men’s Sports

Re “Cal State Northridge Drops 4 Men’s Sports,” June 12:

It is indeed unfortunate that Cal State Northridge has decided to cut four very popular men’s sports. However, it is even more disconcerting that administrators didn’t look at the writing on the wall and plan ahead for gender equity. Where have they been for the past 25 years since Title IX was passed?

I feel no sympathy for the school or administrators, only for the athletes who had the rug pulled out from under them.

* It might seem a bit simplistic, but rather than cut successful sports programs like volleyball and baseball, the athletic department and administration at CSUN should have considered removing the school from the Big Sky conference and eliminating the pathetic football team. A little thinking goes a long way when a school has to decide between sacrificing four sports that produce results and one sport that fails every year to draw fans and revenue.

The loss of four successful sports programs should not be blamed on federal regulations. Rather, the blame lies squarely at the feet of the administration and athletic department that failed to address the Title IX requirements when they were reinstituted in 1988.
