Cousteau’s Son to Join in Fish Count
Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, will join more than 100 other divers for the fifth annual Great American Fish Count next month at the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
Founded in 1992 by Channel Islands National Park biologists, the annual fish count takes a census of fish and other marine species around the Channel Islands and Monterey Bay. This year’s event will take place July 1-14.
Organizers hope that estimates on the fish populations will help scientists get a better understanding of the health of coastal marine habitats.
In addition to Cousteau’s participation, the event will feature an interactive video and a seminar on fish identification.
This is the first time that the fish count will be run on a national level. Groups in Florida and other marine habitats will join the event.
