Padres Rally, End Rockies’ Streak

SAN DIEGO — Archi Cianfrocco hit a go-ahead double in a three-run eighth inning Friday night, leading San Diego over the Colorado Rockies, 5-2, and stopping the Padres’ five-game winning streak.

With the score tied, 2-2, Wally Joyner singled off Mike Munoz (1-2) with one out in the eighth, Mike DeJean relieved and Greg Vaughn reached on an infield single. Cianfrocco’s one-hopper caromed off the third-base bag down the left field line, allowing Joyner to score for a 3-2 lead.

Chris Gomez was intentionally walked, pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney hit a sacrifice fly and pinch-hitter Chris Jones hit a run-scorng single for a three-run lead.

Andy Ashby (3-3) won for the first time in four starts since May 1, giving up two runs and nine hits in eight innings. He was on the disabled list from May 20 to June 15 because of a right elbow strain.

Trevor Hoffman followed with a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

San Diego, which stopped Colorado’s three-game winning streak, had lost 10 of 12 at home and 11 of 14 overall.

Larry Walker, the leading hitter in the majors, went one for three as his average dropped to .415. He got his 1,000th career hit with a fourth-inning single.

San Diego’s Tony Gwynn, second to Walker in the NL batting race at .393, sat out his second consecutive game because of an inflamed Achilles’ tendon.

Rookie Neifi Perez’s first career homer put Colorado ahead in the fourth. Walker followed with a single and scored on Dante Bichette’s two-out double for a 2-0 lead.

Chris Gomez hit an RBI groundout in the third, and San Diego tied the score, 2-2, in the sixth on Steve Finley’s homer off John Burke.
