Privilege to Drive, Not a Right
One June 7 article speaks of some child who has been severely injured in an auto accident due to a speeding teenager.
Another quotes rather belligerent 15- and 16-year-old girls stating they intend to break the law [restricting driver’s licenses] if it is passed. It seems the whole story is missing a fundamental point.
There is nothing in the Constitution that guarantees the right of a teenager to drive a vehicle. It is a privilege gained through the demonstration of responsibility and maturity.
Were I the parent of Kristen Whitney, I would restrict this admitted potential lawbreaker to not having a driver’s license until she has left home and has the financial means to buy her own car and pay for the insurance and all the other expenses involved with driving an automobile.
