Council Issue: Funds for Library Collection

Saying the Newport Beach Library already has an extensive collection of American history books, the city’s arts commission has asked the City Council to reconsider giving the library a $5,950 grant to buy more.

On Monday, the City Council will decide whether to let the library keep the grant or return it to the city’s cultural arts fund.

The idea of building the American history collection was a pet project of Councilman John Hedges. The council voted in favor of Hedges’ grant idea at its June 28 meeting.

But some members of the city’s arts commission thought the council did not have enough information about the library’s current collection when it made the decision.

According to LaDonna Kienitz, city librarian, the Newport Beach Library has more than 8,100 items in its American history collection.

Furthermore, the library staff said it has surplus collection development funds it could use to build on the collection.
