Barry Chosen to All-America Soccer Team

Ventura College sophomore Joy Barry has been selected to the 1997 National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America’s junior college All-American team.
Barry, a former Thousand Oaks High standout, is a two-time Western State Conference player of the year and led the Pirates to consecutive conference titles in the program’s first two seasons.
GOLF
Tied up: David Berganio, Michael Walton, Bob Burns and Chris Zambri shot two-under-par 70s Wednesday in the first round of the $500,000 PGA Tour Qualifying tournament at the Greenlefe Golf and Tennis Resort in Haines City, Fla.
Berganio (Alemany High), Burns (Cal State Northridge and Kennedy High), Walton (Pepperdine) and Zambri (Westlake High) are four strokes behind leader Scott Verplank.
John Johnson, a Nike Tour player from Ventura, shot 72, Jason Gore, of Valencia and Pepperdine, struggled to a 78 and Charlie Wi, from Westlake, was at 79.
The top 35 players in the 98-hole tournament will earn their PGA Tour cards for next year and the next 70 and ties will be fully exempt on the Nike Tour.
Moving up: Sylvia Kim of Simi Valley, Jody Duclos of Moorpark and Linda Chen-Olsen of Granada Hills all advanced in the second round of the 31st California Women’s Amateur Championship at The Golf Club in Carmel Valley.
Chen-Olsen defeated Karen Gysin of Aptos by two holes in match play. Kim needed sudden death to down Theresa Laita of Milpitas. Duclos advanced with a three and two victory over Linda Jeffery of Vandenberg.
