The U.S. water polo team was eliminated from medal contention after an 8-7 loss to Croatia Friday in the second round of the Italian Invitational in Bari, Italy.
Chris Oeding, a former Corona del Mar High standout, scored three goals for the United States, which rallied from a four-goal deficit to take a 7-5 lead midway through the final quarter. The loss sent the U.S. team into the consolation bracket.
Earlier in the day, the United States defeated Greece, 7-3. Gavin Arroyo of Villa Park and Chris Humbert each scored two goals. Goalkeeper Dan Hackett of Irvine had nine saves.
The invitational is a tuneup for the world championship tournament, Jan. 8-18 in Perth, Australia.
