Mountain Lions

Re “Cougar Danger,” Nov. 30.
Susan Bloom’s statement, “We are not encroaching on the predators’ turf, they are encroaching on us, thanks to Animal Regulation,” is a farce. Man has been encroaching on wildlife’s territory for decades.
When we push the wildlife farther and farther into the hills and mountains, as we have been doing for so long, the animals have no choice but to come down to look for food.

* Mountain lions or cougars were here before the people came. If we tread on their territory we can expect encounters with them. Children and pets must be kept away from them, not vice versa. The mountain lions were here first.
If we insist on living on their land, we must accept the consequences, such as high electric fences, however ugly they may be. If we are afraid of them, we should not go into their land.
Killing the mountain lions is not the right solution. Maybe in extreme cases they should be tranquilized and moved farther into the wilderness.
