Council Delays Vote on Police Radio Contract

The Los Angeles City Council on Friday postponed acting on a $51-million contract with Motorola Inc. for a new police radio communications system until a council panel attempts to resolve problems with an existing contract.
Councilwoman Laura Chick, who heads the Public Safety Committee, said she sought the delay because she did not want to take the chance of having the new contract approved despite serious concerns about another Motorola agreement.
Councilman Richard Alatorre, whose Budget and Finance Committee has already approved the new contract, said he did not believe the delay was necessary.
Los Angeles Police Department and Motorola officials met Friday to discuss the company’s proposed changes in its $20-million contract to upgrade the LAPD’s patrol car computer system.
LAPD Cmdr. Carlo Cudio, who oversees the project, said talks with the company will continue.
