Choices Are Plenty for Senior Volunteers

Senior volunteers who know more than just reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic are needed by the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program.
Each year Conejo Valley RSVP “adopts” a local school and the volunteers help students succeed. This year that school is Conejo Elementary School in Thousand Oaks.
Volunteers 55 and older will assist students with reading, math flash cards, computers or library skills. In addition, they will help teachers prepare lessons and help school staff in the office, cafeteria or health office.
A volunteer also is needed to organize the library at Park Oaks School, in Thousand Oaks, and coordinate library volunteers.
Other volunteer opportunities in the Conejo Valley include being a “conversation buddy” for non-English-speaking students, helping taxpayers with their tax forms and greeting the public at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area visitor center.
Several nonprofit agencies also are looking for men and women to help families in need.
RSVP also offers support groups. And members of RSVP provide Medicare and supplemental insurance claim form interpretation free of charge.
Those 55 and older who want to volunteer or take part in one of the workshops or discussion groups can call 381-2742.
The RSVP office is at 1385 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
