Teen Charged With Attempted Murder

An Oxnard teenager has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting and stabbing another teen in September.

David Oliva, 19, turned himself in to authorities at the Ventura County courthouse on Thursday and later pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

Oliva faces a possible life prison sentence if convicted of the charge and an added allegation that the alleged attack was done deliberately and with premeditation.

Authorities say Oliva and two other youths drove to an isolated spot between Camarillo and Oxnard on the night of Sept. 26 and shot and stabbed a 16-year-old boy, leaving him for dead.

“The victim--by a miracle--was able to drag himself onto the roadside,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Bill Haney said.

An off-duty CHP officer saw the teenager and called paramedics. The boy underwent surgery and survived after being listed in critical condition for several weeks, according to authorities.

On Friday, Haney asked a Municipal Court judge to set Oliva’s bail at $1 million due to the circumstances of the case. Oliva’s defense attorney argued in favor of a bail reduction, and Judge Edward Brodie set the amount at $500,000.

Oliva is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the charge on Dec. 30.
