A Long Beach Transit driver died Wednesday as he lost control of a bus carrying six passengers that hit a utility pole and plunged off an embankment, coming to rest in a residential yard, police said.
The driver, heading west on South Street near San Gabriel Boulevard at the border of Lakewood and Cerritos, swerved off the road about 6:15 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Galbraith said.
Four passengers were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The two other passengers were taken to nearby hospitals, also with minor injuries, Galbraith said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Galbraith said.
“They’re guessing it might have been a heart attack, but it’s only a guess at this point,” Galbraith said.
The driver’s name was not released, pending notification of relatives.
