Airing It Out

The arrival of screaming fighter planes, thundering military helicopters and daredevils jumping out of the sky served as a preview Friday for the two-day Aviation Expo ’97 today and Sunday at Van Nuys Airport. An estimated 300,000 spectators--the largest attendance at an annual event in Los Angeles--are expected at the air show. Early observers who stopped to watch the goings-on Friday were treated to a demonstration leap by the U.S. Army parachute team, the Golden Knights. Team member J.J. Little, above, awaits his jump. The Golden Knights’ performance will be repeated twice both days, in addition to demonstrations of military, rescue and precision-flying aircraft, a Stealth fighter flight simulator, food and souvenir booths and a model airplane show. A B-2 Stealth bomber is expected to fly over the show about 3 p.m. Sunday.
