Emergency Access Road in Danger of Collapse

Malibu officials are awaiting a loan from the county Board of Supervisors even more eagerly this week after learning that an emergency access route along Kanan Dume Road is in danger of collapsing.
The city’s director of public works, John Clement, told the Malibu City Council that the landslide that destroyed a portion of the road and caused its closure last year is eroding the emergency vehicle lane.
With a $404,000 loan from the county, which he said should be confirmed in the next two weeks, Clement will be able to purchase from Caltrans 50,000 cubic yards of dirt to rebuild the road.
The dirt from Caltrans won’t be available until mid-October, bringing the construction schedule close to the rainy season, he said.
“I have a very short window of opportunity to complete this project,” Clement said.
