Foothill, ranked second in Southern Section Division I boys’ water polo, ended top-ranked Long Beach Wilson’s 39-game winning streak with a 4-3 overtime victory in the final of the Cal State Invitational Saturday at San Jose Bellarmine Prep.
Robby Arroyo scored the winning goal for Foothill (19-4), his third of the game, with 58 seconds left in the first half of overtime.
Wilson hadn’t lost since Foothill beat the Bruins, 13-12, in sudden death on Oct. 15, 1996. Arroyo also scored the winning goal in that game.
Wilson has beaten Foothill twice this season--10-3 and 7-2. Saturday, Foothill took a 3-2 lead with 5 minutes 4 seconds left in the fourth quarter on a goal by Nick Pirro. Wilson’s Jeff Nesmith scored less than a minute later to tie the score.
In the semifinals, Arroyo scored four goals to lead Foothill over Orinda Miramonte, 11-9.
