Flathers, Gidabblda Win Newport Race

NEWPORT BEACH — Kelly Flathers of Huntington Beach and Wilhelm Gidabblda, a former Riverside College standout, won the women’s and men’s 10K races at the Hard Rock Cafe Run for Cover Sunday at Fashion Island.
Flathers, 26, won in 17 minutes 24 seconds, and Elisa Cuellar of San Clemente followed 11 seconds later.
Gidabblda, who won the Orange Empire Conference cross-country title in 1994, won the men’s division in 14:46. Gidabblda, 23, is from Tanzania.
Ben Mejia, who ran at Santa Ana College last season, was second in 15:29.
