Asian Pacific Health Day Planned Saturday

In the continuing efforts to address the lack of bilingual and culturally sensitive health care service providers, the Asian and Pacific Islander Council of the San Fernando Valley will conduct its sixth annual Asian Pacific Family Health and Cultural Day on Saturday.
The event, to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center, has in the past been successful in networking health care service providers with the Asian and Pacific Islander community residing in the Valley.
Free health screenings will be provided at the event.
“Many Asians prefer only Oriental medicine and are unfamiliar with Western medicine and modern machines for checkup,” said Akiko Yasuike, a spokeswoman for the group. “However, the biggest barrier is language. They don’t know what’s going on and can’t communicate with doctors.”
Language barriers, according to Yasuike, will not be a problem at the event as health care information written in seven different languages--Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Thai and Spanish--will be made available.
The San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center is located at 12953 Branford St. in Pacoima.
