Campaign to Recall Council Members OKd

A campaign to recall two City Council members got the green light Friday when City Clerk May Doi approved the recall petitions.
Organizers said they would begin gathering signatures today to recall James Cragin and Gwen Duffy, who have been on the council since 1982.
Cragin and Duffy are being targeted because they opposed a council decision to place City Manager Ken Landau on administrative leave while the district attorney’s office investigates complaints that Landau inflated travel expenses and hired a private detective to investigate city officials.
The council voted last month to place Landau on leave while the council works out the terms of a $267,500 buyout. Cragin and Duffy said they preferred a contract buyout to putting Landau on leave because the investigation and a possible trial could drag on for months.
The organizers have 120 days to collect about 4,400 signatures that would put a recall measure on the ballot next spring.
