LONG BEACH — A man who reportedly exchanged gunfire with a Long Beach police officer eluded authorities for nearly nine hours Wednesday before being taken into custody after a three-hour standoff at an apartment near Ninth Street and Atlantic Avenue, police said Thursday.
Antonio Carlos Gallegos, 29, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, said Long Beach police spokesman Harry Erickson. The incident began when a woman flagged down patrol officers after seeing a man brandish a gun at a group of youths about 3 p.m. Wednesday.
An officer ordered the man to drop the weapon, but the suspect fired at the officer and fled as the officer returned fire, investigators said. No one was wounded in the exchange of gunfire in an alley near 5th Street and Atlantic. Gallegos surrendered to a SWAT team at midnight.
