Sue Newcomb, coach of the L.A. Baptist High girls’ volleyball team, will retire at the end of the season.
Newcomb has been a fixture at the North Hills school since being hired as an assistant in 1975. She has guided the Knights to 12 league titles in 16 seasons.
“I’m ready to not have the commitment and pressure of it,” said Newcomb, whose team is ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division IV-A. “It’ll be nice to go home [next] fall and have some time to myself.”
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
On the sideline: Former Crespi High offensive lineman Kane Cullum is academically ineligible at Colorado this season after coming up short on units required to maintain his playing status.
SWIMMING
Future Trojan: Saugus High senior Heather Boylan has committed to swim at USC after visiting the campus last weekend.
Boylan has won five Southern Section Division II individual titles the past three years and competed in the U.S. National Swimming Championships this year.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Still a winner: Junior Amy Skieresz of Arizona won her 10th consecutive cross-country race over the past two years Saturday when she covered the 6,000-meter course in the Mountain West Classic at the University of Montana in 20:32.
Skieresz, defending NCAA champion and a 1995 graduate of Agoura High, is 3-0 in cross-country races this season after going 7-0 in 1996.
