With his team struggling with a 1-3 record in its first season of 11-man football, Coach Tom Caffrey shuffled the lineup, moving his son from fullback to tailback. Paul Caffrey flourished, rushing for 422 yards and seven touchdowns, both county records, in 20 carries to lead the Patriots to a 70-21 victory over Sherman Oaks Buckley.

* Laguna Hills, senior. Rushed for 259 yards in 17 carries in Hawks’ 50-12 victory over Estancia to become the county’s all-time career rushing leader with 5,539 yards.

* Los Alamitos, senior. Scored four goals in top-ranked Los Alamitos’ 10-8 victory over Capistrano Valley, ranked sixth in the county.
Grant Wagner/Football/Quarterback
* Esperanza, senior. Completed 19 of 29 passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns in Esperanza’s 31-28 victory over then-No. 4 Los Alamitos.
