Girls on Film

What it is: It’s girls on film . . . duh. A chick’s-eye view of movies: reviews, commentary and fluff. All the articles and reviews have a link to a bulletin board set up for the topic. Current stints with “Girls on Art,” “Girls on Classics” and book reviews will eventually become their own sites, said Dan Pelson, president of Concrete Media, which owns GOF. Pelson’s plan for GOF’s future lies in branding, with a GOF book due out by the end of the year, and possibly even a TV show, he said. GOF makes some money through advertising, which Pelson expects to grow as the site expands.
How it is: Very Sassy-magazine-during-the-Jane-Pratt-years. Just a bunch of girls (they all use their first names) talking about movies. GOF is full of personality, doesn’t take itself too seriously and even looks fun--tons of icons, tons of typefaces, tons of colors. After initially being put off by use of the word “‘anyhoo,” I was hooked after reading that “Forrest Gump” was on their list of worst films ever made.
Ultimate TV

What it is: Pretty standard, though comprehensive, fare. News of questionable newsworthiness, columns by people who shouldn’t be writing columns, TV listings, Nielsen ratings, soaps, sports, celebrity features, chats, Web casts, user-submitted links and discussion boards. It also has information on how to reach networks, cable stations and other television-related places. JDTV, a Milwaukee TV listings publishing firm, foots the bill for the site. But, says Ultimate TV President Jeff Rowe with nary a snicker, it plans to turn a profit within 18 months. Heard that before? Well, with a “lean, mean” staff of 10, Ultimate TV might have a shot.
How it is: Why do I like Ultimate TV? Because I like TV. And if you like TV, then you’ll like Ultimate TV too. The fall preview is worth the price of admission alone. (OK, OK, so it’s free--you get the idea.) The site could stand a little more commentary and a lot more personality. But if all you want is information and you want it now, check it out.
