Mother Held in Death of Newborn Baby

Police arrested a women’s shelter worker on suspicion of murder Monday after she dumped her hours-old baby on the side of the road in Agua Dulce, authorities said.
Miriam Guerrero, 22, led Los Angeles Police Department detectives to Agua Dulce Canyon Road near the Antelope Valley Freeway, where they found a box, said Officer Stinson Brown. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office later confirmed that the box contained a newborn girl who apparently suffocated.
Guerrero told police she gave birth Thursday at the Wilshire district women’s shelter where she worked, Brown said. About 1:30 a.m. Friday, she allegedly dumped the newborn in Agua Dulce.
Detectives began investigating Friday after someone reported that Guerrero may have given birth at the shelter and dumped the infant in a trash can there, Brown said. But detectives found no baby and could not locate Guerrero.
Police found Guerrero on Monday and she later led police to the site where the infant was found, Brown said.
