Harwood Helps Pace Irvine to Victory in Swimming

Ryan Harwood won two races and was on two winning relay teams to help top-ranked Irvine defeat host Santa Margarita, 107-62, Wednesday in a Sea View League boys’ swimming meet.
Harwood, who won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute 48 seconds, won the 100 freestyle (49.38). He was on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:41.57) and 400 freestyle relay (3:22.29) teams.
Santa Margarita’s Frank Uxa won the 200 individual medley (1:55.83) and 100 butterfly (53.82).
In another Sea View League meet:
Newport Harbor 97, El Toro 75--Kevin Becker had section qualifying times in the 50 freestyle (22.56) and 100 freestyle (50.31) for host Newport Harbor (2-1, 2-1).
In Pacific Coast League girls’ swimming:
University 92, Costa Mesa 76--University’s Jessica Hayes won the 50 freestyle in 24.23, the county’s top time this season.
In Sea View League girls’ swimming:
No. 1 Irvine 125, No. 8 Santa Margarita 45--Irvine’s 200 freestyle relay won in 1:38.55, the county’s top time this season. Erin Zehtner, Amanda Beard, Stephanie Hsiao and Leslie Christiansen make up the team.
In South Coast League golf:
Dana Hills 206, Capistrano Valley 209--Capistrano Valley’s Casey Peet was the medalist with a two-over-par 38 at El Niguel.
In a nonleague match:
Servite 196, Santa Margarita 207, University 207--Servite’s Will Luciano was the medalist, shooting par 36 on Coto de Caza’s South Course.
Brian Sinay and Ron Won each shot 38 for University (8-2). Sophomore Steve Conway shot 40 to lead Santa Margarita (5-2).
In nonleague gymnastics:
Brea Olinda 175.50, Long Beach Wilson 151.90--Katie McCorkle won the all-around for Brea Olinda (6-0), winning the vault (9.00) and uneven bars (9.30).
In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:
Los Amigos 9, Pacifica 9 (Los Amigos wins on games 78-77)--Danny Ong and Minh Tran won in doubles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, to lead visiting Los Amigos.
In a nonleague match:
No. 9 Esperanza 11, No. 8 Servite 7--Chip Macomber and Robert Salem won in doubles for Esperanza, 6-0, 6-4, 6-4. Teammates Pat O’Donnell and Eric Song won, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4. The Aztecs are 11-3.
Ryan Moore of Servite won in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.
In Academy League boys’ volleyball:
St. Margaret’s 3, Capistrano Valley Christian 1--Dylan Gilbert had 18 kills and younger brother Colin had 15 for St. Margaret’s, which won, 15-10, 15-5, 12-15, 15-3. Capistrano Valley Christian is 5-4, 2-1; St. Margaret’s is 7-1, 3-0
In the Golden West League:
Servite 3, Tustin 2--Eric Barnes had 29 kills and Scott Lambert had 20 kills and 14 digs for host Servite (9-1, 4-0), which rallied to win, 10-15, 11-15, 15-13, 17-15, 15-12.
Setter Billy Hamilton had 81 assists and 21 digs for the Friars.
Westminster 3, Saddleback 1--Jared Barnes had 29 kills and Junior Tau had 21 kills for Westminster (6-4, 2-2), which won, 11-15, 15-1, 15-7, 15-8.
In the South Coast League:
No. 8 Mater Dei 3, No. 6 Dana Hills 0--David VanSambeek had 15 blocks for the Monarchs, who won, 15-11, 15-6, 15-6. Dave Moser had 15 kills for the visiting Dolphins (6-3, 2-1).
Capistrano Valley 3, Trabuco Hills 1--Brady Starr had 26 kills and Beau Rawi added 20 kills and eight blocks for the visiting Cougars (2-5, 1-2), who won, 15-2, 17-15, 13-15, 15-11. Mike Okano had 14 kills for Trabuco Hills (6-4, 2-2).
