A wrong-way driver crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle on Pacific Coast Highway Friday, killing himself and injuring four others, police said.
Timothy Saletel, 43, of Orange was driving southbound when he inexplicably crossed over into the northbound lanes near Magnolia Street about 2:30 p.m., police said. After about half a mile, he crashed into a Jeep.
Saletel died at the scene, and the three women and one man in the Jeep, all from Riverside County and all in their teens or early 20s, were injured.
Officer Mike Kelley said two victims appeared to be in serious condition and the other two suffered moderate injuries. They were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange and Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, he said.
The northbound lanes were closed while rescuers used power tools to free some of the victims, Kelley said. The names of the injured were not released.
