Mike Oquist became the first pitcher to give up 14 earned runs in 22 years, and Chuck Knoblauch homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs as the New York Yankees overwhelmed Oakland, 14-1, Monday night at Oakland.
Oquist (6-9) set a franchise record for runs given up and gave up 16 hits in five innings. With the Yankees and Athletics scheduled to play a doubleheader today, the A’s saved their bullpen by sacrificing Oquist, who lost his fourth consecutive decision.
Matt Stairs tied an Athletics franchise record by homering in his fifth consecutive game.
Orlando Hernandez (6-3) pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight in his second complete game.
Seattle 3, Boston 1--Rookie Shane Monahan’s first major league homer, a two-run shot in the seventh inning, gave the Mariners the victory at Seattle.
Seattle’s Ken Griffey Jr., who leads the AL with 41 homers, went one for four and did not homer for his fourth game in a row.
Chicago 6, Tampa Bay 1--James Baldwin continued his dominance over the Devil Rays, becoming the first three-time winner over the expansion team.
Baldwin (7-4) outdueled rookie Rolando Arrojo (11-8) at St. Petersburg, Fla., for the second time in a week. The Chicago starter had a shutout until Fred McGriff homered with one out in the ninth.
